Brain-Computer Interface Systems

Context

What are Brain-Computer Interface systems?

Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) systems allow establishing, through real-time analysis of the user's brain waves, a direct communication between the brain and an external device without the need to use muscles or peripheral nerves. Although it is possible to employ these systems using different brain signal acquisition techniques, our research focuses on BCI systems based on the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal.

Our objective

In our research line we seek to develop non-invasive BCI systems to improve the quality of life of people through the development of assistive applications, neurorehabilitation, cognitive training or video games. Among the main applications, we highlight:

  • icon Assistive applications for people with severe motor disabilities.
  • icon Integration of an additional degree of freedom in video games.
  • icon Support for stroke neurorehabilitation.
  • icon Cognitive training of elderly people
  • icon Software development for programming BCI systems.

Now, more than ever, non-invasive BCI systems have the potential to improve human capabilities and quality of life, without the need for surgical procedures.

Support and entertainment applications

Exogenous paradigms, which are based on presenting a series of external stimuli (e.g., visual, auditory or tactile) to elicit responses in the user's brain activity, can be used to develop assistive applications. Analysis of this response can identify the user's intention to select particular control commands. Our group has a great expertise designing systems based on code-modulated visual evoked potentials (c-VEP) and P300 evoked potentials. Some of the projects developed are:

Neuro-regulation applications

Within endogenous paradigms, users learn to self-regulate their own brain activity with the goal of inducing neuroplasticity and achieving cognitive benefit. In these closed-loop systems, the user's brain activity is analyzed in real time, and a series of features reflecting that activity are presented to the user. Through operant conditioning, the user learns to modify his or her brain activity to achieve certain goals. In this way, the neural networks associated with the trained features are strengthened, inducing an improvement of certain cognitive or motor functions associated with these neural networks. Some of the projects developed are:

EEG signal processing & analysis

BCI systems require processing and analysis methods to quickly and reliably determine users' intentions from their brainwaves. Due to the characteristics of the electroencephalography (EEG) signal, this is a complex task. It is therefore of particular interest to investigate new methods to improve the accuracy of BCI systems and to make them more comfortable and easier to use. We focus on the development of:

Deep learning based algorithms

icon

Early stopping and asynchrony algorithms

icon

Interpretation of deep learning networks by means of eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI)

BCI Coding

BCI software development

Building BCI systems requires a significant effort in developing software to acquire the signal, process it in real time and display the feedback to the user through a graphical interface. In order to simplify the development of BCI systems and neuroscience experiments, our group has created MEDUSA©, an open source, Python-based software ecosystem. MEDUSA© is compatible with most EEG recording equipment on the market, and offers development examples for experiments based on P300, c-VEP, sensorimotor rhythms (SMR) and neurofeedback (NF), as well as digitized cognitive psychology tests (e.g., Stroop, Go/No-Go, Corsi, etc). The main tools are:

MEDUSA© Kernel: a stand-alone PyPI package with signal processing methods

MEDUSA© Platform: environment for biosignal visualization and development of BCI applications and neuroscience experiments
